10 waterproof running jackets to keep you dry

There’s no reason you should feel comfortable exercising outdoors: Follow this expert guide to find a waterproof jacket that breathes and blocks the wind.

The importance of a waterproof running jacket

If you’re an avid runner, walker, or hiker, chances are the weather won’t stop you from clocking your miles.

This means you need your portion of waterproof running gear that will keep you dry and comfortable during your workout.

“Having a waterproof jacket is an essential part of your workout gear to make sure you’re still getting a good workout, as is having the right sneakers,” explains Roger Adams, personal trainer, nutrition physician and owner of eatrightfitness.com, off. “The wrong type of jacket can make you overheat because you can’t regulate your temperature properly.”

While you might be tempted to put on a regular rain jacket when bad weather comes up before your run, hike, or hike, Adams cautions that they only protect you from the rain and keep you dry.

Waterproof track jackets, on the other hand, are designed for more.

“They are designed to prevent you from overheating by drawing moisture away from your skin, allowing your perspiration to leave your body and cool you down as it should,” explains Adams. “Otherwise, your sweat would get trapped under the jacket and lead to a potentially dangerous rise in body temperature.”

What should you pay attention to in a waterproof jacket?

When buying a waterproof running jacket that you can also use for walking or hiking, here are some of the features that experts say are most important.

Water repellent: “Water-resistant fabrics keep you comfortable in light rain, but let some water through in heavier rains,” explains Tom Holland, exercise physiologist and fitness expert.

“Water-repellent jackets are treated with a special coating that allows water to bead and roll off the garment and not easily penetrate, keeping you dry in the more challenging rainy conditions.”

windproof: Where there is rain, there is usually also wind. A waterproof running jacket that is windproof also ensures that you are comfortable and do not feel that you are held back while running.

Breathability: Breathability is a must for a running jacket, and this is especially true for running jackets designed for the rain.

“The harder and longer you train, the more breathability you want and need from your jacket,” says Holland.

“The less breathable the jacket, the higher your body temperature during a workout, which can be uncomfortable and hinder performance.”

Number of layers: Just like regular running jackets, waterproof variants can be supplied with many different layers.

“It can be a bit confusing, but 2.5 layers is the lightest, 2 layers is generally considered the ‘quietest’ and 3-layer jackets are the most durable and recommended for the more extreme weather conditions,” says Holland .

“Again, you need to consider what kind of workouts (duration, intensity, frequency) you’re going to do and under what specific circumstances to make the best personal choice.”
