The active ingredients in deodorants and antiperspirants

The reason, and the main way to differentiate between the two, is the ingredients. “The active ingredient in deodorant is usually cornstarch or sodium bicarbonate, also known as baking soda,” explains Dr. Green out. “Baking soda is a mixture of sodium ions and bicarbonate ions. These work synergistically to fight odor, acidity and bacteria. Because of its ability to destroy bacteria and some mold, baking soda can be a great addition to your deodorant to give you that fresh, clean scent.

You may also see alcohol, triclosan, or propylene glycol in deodorant, adds dermatologist Peterson Pierre, MD, founder of the Pierre Skin Care Institute. “These ingredients are there to kill bacteria,” he says. “Deodorants also often have scents and perfumes to mask the odor.” Meanwhile, most antiperspirants use some form of aluminum to combat wetness. “Aluminum works by blocking the sweat glands so you don’t sweat as much,” says Dr. green. “There has been a lot of discussion about the possible link between aluminum, Alzheimer’s disease and breast cancer, although multiple studies have not shown any correlation whatsoever,” said Dr. Pierre. “Animal studies have revealed some altered hormone regulation, but so far no studies have shown a definitive health risk.” Still, it doesn’t hurt for women with a family history of breast cancer to choose a product that is aluminum-free, although it will affect the effects. (These are the myths about breast cancer to ignore.) “There’s nothing natural that will block or prevent you from sweating,” cautions board-certified dermatologist Debra Jaliman, MD, author of Skin Rules: Trade Secrets from a Top New York Dermatologist.
