Yoga Unitards: 10 You Can Wear Anywhere

Yoga unitards are having a moment. Here’s why they might be worth adding to your wardrobe, plus what to look for when buying and expert recommendations.

Are yoga unitards the new leggings?

There’s a new athleisure trend that threatens the longevity of the beloved workout tights — even celebrities are jumping on board. But you really don’t have to worry about the legging trend going anywhere anytime soon.

In fact, yoga unitards (yes, that’s what they’re called) are actually virtual extensions of the standard activewear leggings. That means you can wear them practically anywhere. Here’s what you need to know – and how.

What is a Yoga Unitard?

A yoga unitard, also called a “onesie,” is a one-piece piece of clothing, much like a jumpsuit, but made of technical, sweat-wicking fabric that stretches and moves with the body, explains yoga instructor Dina Ivas.

With no open areas other than where your arms, feet and neck come out, this athletic garment allows you to move freely and confidently.

Benefits of wearing a yoga unitard

Here’s a closer look at some of the benefits of rocking a yoga unit whether you’re at the yoga studio, sitting on the couch at home, or having lunch with friends.

They don’t roll up

“Instead of worrying that your clothes come up every time you bend over, you can focus on the movement without pulling your clothes down, and because yoga units fit tightly around your body, they stay on, no matter how you move your body. body,” says Stephanie Mansour, a Chicago-based corporate wellness trainer.

They are comfortable

Yoga unitards don’t have a waistband like most other fitness pants, making them much more comfortable than wearing a shirt and pants, according to Mansour.

“Sometimes running or jumping up and down will cause waistbands to drop, but with yoga unitards, you don’t have to worry,” she says. “There is no discomfort when it comes to tight bands around your waist.”

(Here’s the answer to another comfort question: whether or not to wear underwear with workout clothes.)

They are versatile

Unitards don’t just work for yoga, but they’re great for other forms of exercise, notes Stephanie George, certified yoga instructor and personal trainer.

“Yoga unitards are even useful for weightlifting, because you don’t have to struggle with strings or hoodies on sweatshirts when you pull up your leggings after doing squats,” she says. “The unitard brings focus back to your workout and removes the distraction of clothing.”

What should you pay attention to in a yoga unitard

Here are some of the features that experts recommend to look for when buying a yoga unitard.

Material

Mansour recommends considering material above all else.

“Having a soft, lightweight unitard can make a big difference during exercise because you don’t want to be weighed down by uncomfortable material,” she says.

George agrees, adding that your unitard’s material should be sweat-wicking and breathable.

“This keeps you cool during your workouts,” she says. “Also look for fabric that’s also microbial if you plan on wearing it after your workout.”

Band Thickness:

Mansour recommends making sure your yoga unitard’s straps are the thickness you prefer. “Personally, I prefer fat tires so they don’t slide off when I move,” she says.

The thinner the band, the more likely it is to fall off during your workout.

Coverage

Depending on the type of exercise you’re performing, you may want to choose a yoga unit with short sleeves, or spaghetti straps, or one that’s cropped instead of full-length.

You can make the decision based on whether you will exercise in the heat or participate in heated exercises such as hot yoga.

Style

As with any clothing purchase you make, it’s important to make sure your unitard works for you.

“If you have a bigger bust, look for unitards with thicker straps and don’t forget to have fun,” George says. “Yoga unitards come in a variety of colors and textures — everything from snakeskin to deep purple.”
